Car Rentals in New York City and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is presented by Macy's Department Store. It is a huge event that takes place at 9:00a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and lasts for 3 hours. If you are in town on Thanksgiving with a car rental in New York City, be sure to come down and see the parade.

European Tradition with an American Twist

The parade began in the 1920s. Many employees at Macy's were second-generation immigrants and wanted to celebrate their American heritage with a festival similar to ones they had celebrated in Europe. In 1924, employees marched to the flagship store on 34th Street in costumes with floats, bands, and even live animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo. At the end, Santa Claus came to Herald Square. Today Santa stills comes to the parade, so be sure to come down with your car rental in New York City to see the parade. The first parade was such a success that the store declared that it would be an annual event. However, the live animals were soon replaced with balloon ones in 1927. By the 1930s the parade attracted over 1 million people and the parade was broadcast on local radio stations. The parade was suspended during the war because rubber and helium was needed for the war.

In 1947, the parade was featured in the movie Miracle on 34th Street. This attracted a lot of attention for the parade. Soon after it was televised in New York, drawing over two million spectators. In 1950, the parade was broadcast nationwide and has been ever since. The parade still gets a lot of attention. To really feel a part of it you should come down with your car rental in New York City to see and experience the parade.

Parade Route

The parade starts at the American Museum of Natural History on 77th and 81st Streets at Central Park West. It then heads south along Central Park. Around this area the balloons are held low to avoid trees and other objects as much as possible. At Columbus Circle the parade turns onto Broadway. Here the balloons are raised to their full height and continues to Times Square. They then go to the Macy's building at Herald Square. From there it turns right onto 34th Street and then right again onto 7th Avenue where the balloons are taken down and the parade is packed up. You should come down with your car rental in New York City to see and experience the parade. The parade always goes rain or shine, so be prepared for all types of weather!

An Experience You Don't Want to Miss

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is a true New York experience you will not want to miss if you are in town for Thanksgiving. This is a great experience for kids, but you don't have to have any to go. Just come down to a location anywhere along the parade route with your car rental in New York City to be a part of this American tradition. You are sure not to be disappointed!
