Located in Westhampton, Gebraski Airport serves the eastern portion of Long Island. The location of Gebraski Airport was originally used as an Air Force base during World War II. After the war, the land was given to Suffolk County until the Korean War broke out and it was reclaimed by the Air Force in 1951. By 1970 it was back in the hands of the county and turned into a commercial airport. It was renamed in 1991 in honor of Colonel Francis S. Gebraski, a former base commander and World War II air ace. Today Gebraski Airport is a general aviation facility with one of the longest runways in New York. It is mainly used by corporate businesses, private owners and air taxi services. However there are two fixed operators from this airport: Malloy Air East and Long Island Jet Center.
