New York Car Rentals and Flushing Meadows Park
With all the hustle and bustle of New York City living, finding open space to getaway is always welcomed! If you are in the Queens area during your New York car rental stay, stop by Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, also referred to as Flushing Meadows Park. Located in northern Queens, Flushing Meadows Park is the third largest public park in the City of New York and was created as the site of the 1939/1940 New York World's Fair and also hosted the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair. It is run and operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
Where the Legacy Began
You not believe it when you first see it, but Flushing Meadows was once a swamp, but has since become a great place to stretch your legs or ride a bike. There are also museums, sports, history, a zoo, and much more to check out. If you are traveling with a group during your New York car rental, you can easily spend an afternoon or longer in the park because there's something for everyone
Many people visit Flushing Meadows Park for the Mets or the US Open, however there is much more to be seen! Start in the central area at the Unisphere, a giant steel globe installed during the 1964-65 World's Fair. The globe has stood the test of time and its base is a popular spot for strollers and a few skateboarders. The Unisphere is next to the Queens Museum of Art (built for the 1939-40 World's Fair) and a couple of small parking lots, just off the Grand Central Parkway, and south of Arthur Ashe Stadium. It sits on a major pedestrian crossroads, from which it's easy to explore the lakes, watch soccer games and other sports, or get a bite to eat from vendors.
Attention: Sport Enthusiasts
Don't let your entire New York car rental time be spent without taking out some time to enjoy some recreational athletics! There is no better place to enjoy this than at Flushing Meadows! Here are just some of the things you can enjoy during your New York car rental vacation:
Soccer
No matter what time of the year your New York car rental is booked, you will likely be able to catch a soccer game in progress at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The nearby Latino community in Corona often fields futbol teams. Near the Unisphere there are a number of soccer fields ready for pickup games or more serious affairs.
Tennis
If your New York car rentals vacation has you visiting the park in August, you will be just in time for the US Open. The US Tennis Association (USTA) holds the US Open every August at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and US Tennis Association National Tennis Center. The facilities are open to the public throughout the year including the indoor and outdoor courts, and programs for adults, youths, and seniors.
Other Sports
Other sports players and spectators can also enjoy include baseball, softball, cricket, Ultimate Frisbee, among many others!.
