New York Events Overview

Legend has it that New York City gained its nickname "Gotham City" when the Wise Men of Gotham, Nottinghamshire, England, felt threatened by a visit from King John (ruled from 1199 to 1216). The Wise Men of Gotham discouraged King John from staying in the court by pretending to be stupid. Royal messengers performed ridiculous acts, like joining hands around a thorn bush to capture a cuckoo. In 15th-century Wakefield plays, "foles of Gotham" are noted.

When looking for "fools" or entertainers, remember that a New York car rental will help you find your way through the 6,374.6 miles of streets in the Big Apple.

Backstage Tour of Metropolitan Opera House

Theatre and opera lovers should not only experience a performance a the Metropolitan Opera House, they should also go on a backstage tour for a behind-the-scenes look. See the rehearsal rooms and dressing rooms where the performers prepare themselves for the big show. See the enormous elevator that transports sets and props. Tickets for this half-hour tour are $10 apiece for the general public. Full-time students get a discounted rate of $5. Tours take place October to June on weekdays at 3:30 p.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday Night Live

New York car rental has a tip on becoming one of the live audience members for the hit improv show: send one e-mail with all contact information to snltickets@nbc.ca in August. Ticket requests can only be made each August. Only send in one e-mail request as duplicate entries will be deleted. The lucky winners of the lottery will receive two tickets to a pre-assigned show date and dress rehearsal or live show performance.

If you missed the August deadline last year, you have a "stand-by" option. To try for "stand-by" tickets, arrive no later than 7:00 am on the morning of the taping. Line up under the "NBC Studios" marquee on the 50th Street side of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. These tickets are for either the 8:00 pm dress p.m. dress rehearsal or the 11:30 pm live show. Each person will only get one ticket. And also note that a stand-by ticket does not guarantee you'll get in.

The David Letterman Show

To see Dave do his schtick at the Ed Sullivan Theatre, you can do so by doing one of three things:
1. Submitting an online ticket form.
2. Visiting the theatre between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Monday to Friday or Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. to submit an In-Person request.
3. Calling (212) 247-6497 starting at 11:00 a.m. on the day of the taping you wish to attend for stand-by tickets. Your name will be placed on a stand-by list in the order the call was received. Check in to the theater about one hour before the taping. If there is room, you will be admitted into the actual taping. All attendees must show a government-issued picture identification card to match the names given on the phone.

The Ed Sullivan Theatre (where the Letterman show is taped) is located at 1697 Broadway Between West 53rd and West 54th Streets.

River to River Festival

Between Sept. 7th and 10th, head downtown in a New York car rental to catch the River to River Festival where you'll get a sample of cutting-edge new media/new drawing works by emerging artists.

10th Annual Harvest in the Square

If you're looking to have a taste test of neighborhood restaurants, wines and microbrews, then New York car rental encourages you to take advantage of the 10th Annual Harvest in the Square Sept. 22, 2005. Here, you'll get unlimited tastings of dishes, desserts and wines from the most celebrated eateries. All proceeds go towards a Capital Campaign for redeveloping Union Square Park's north end.
