Car Rentals in New York City and the Chrysler Building

The Chrysler Building was completed in 1930 and at the time was the tallest building in the world until the Empire State Building was completed one year later. It can be found on the east side of Manhattan on 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue. Although it is still called the Chrysler Building, it is currently owned by TMW Real Estate and Tishman Speyer Properties. With your car rental in New York City, you can see the world's first building to be built higher than 1000 feet and the world's tallest brick building still.

A Race for the Tallest Building

Come down to Manhattan with your car rental in New York City to see this building designed by William van Alen. When the building was being built, there was a lot of competition in New York about building the world's tallest skyscraper. The Chrysler building was built at an amazing average of 4 floors per week, with no workers being killed on the job. Just before it was completed, it was the same height as another building, H. Craig Severance's 40 Wall Street. Severance added two feet to his building to claim the title of the tallest building, but van Alen was not to be outdone. He had secretly gotten permission to build a 185 foot spire, which he was constructing inside the building. When the spire was hoisted to the top of the building on October 23, 1929, the Chrysler building was both the world's tallest building and the world's tallest structure. However, the Empire State Building soon outdid the Chrysler Building to become the tallest building in the world.

Architecture

This building to see with your car rental in New York City has Art Deco architecture with features that were used on Chrysler cars at the time the building was built. On the 61st floor you will find eagles, replicas of the 1929 Chrysler hood ornament. On the 31st floor there are replicas of the 1929 Chrysler radiator caps. It is probably one of the best examples of Art Deco of the period in New York architecture, which is why you should come see it with your car rental in New York City. The lobby of the building is also very elegant. There once was a gallery and restaurant in the lobby, but they were not able to survive the Great Depression and were closed. Today there is a private club on the observation floors. This building is still a favorite among New Yorkers and tourists alike. In 2005, New York's Skyscraper Museum asked a hundred professionals which tower was their favorite, and the Chrysler Building was rated very highly among most of them.

Midtown

Midtown Manhattan, where the Chrysler building is located, is a great place to visit with your car rental in New York City. Also located in this area are the Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, and the Empire State Building. This is a huge commercial district, with the majority of the city's skyscrapers. Here you will find some of the great stores in Times Square and Fifth Avenue. There are also cultural activities in the area, including The Museum of Modern Art, Broadway, Carnegie Hall, and the United Nations Headquarters.
